20 September 1961 (Non-provisional) Departed Vietnam: 7 March 1973 Previous Station: Vietnam Authorized Strength: Headquarters 1964 - 543 1966 - 480 1968 - 324 1970 -421 Since the U.S. Army Security Agency (USASA) command and control headquarters in Vietnam underwent numerous changes in numerical designation, they have been all grouped together under the title of the final headquarters in Vietnam. It should be remembered that all missions of the agency were highly classified during the war and secret cover designations (Radio Research Units) utilized in lieu of actual unit designations on the station lists and reports, rather than the true designations as given below. The 400th USASA Operations Unit (Provisional) was first organized in Saigon on 23 May 1961. This formation was soon replaced by an authorized formation, the 82nd USASA Special Operations Unit, on 20 September 1961. This unit in return was re-designated as the 53rd USASA Special Operations Command on 1 November 1964. Less than two years later on 1 June 1966 this command was replaced by the 509th USASA Operations Group with a headquarters of 124 personnel (the 1966 given above is for the 53rd USASA Command headquarters only). The group was finally designated as the USASA Group, Vietnam, on 15 December 1967. In March 1973 the USASA Group, Vietnam was discontinued. The headquarters of all these formations were located in Saigon. |
