HOW WAS THE DESIGN FOR THE VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL WALL SELECTED?
The design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was selected in1981 from entries submitted in a nationwide competition. 1,421 entries were received, each assigned a number. Eight individuals, recognized in the fields of architecture, sculpture, and landscape architecture, were chosen as jurors. After five days of judging, their unanimous choice was entry Number 1026. Onejuror described it as "the finest and most appropriate".
More than 60,000 items have been left at The Wall by
visitors since its dedication in 1982.
WHO WAS THE DESIGNER OF THE WALL?
The designer, Maya Lin, was a 21-year-old architecture student at Yale University. The memorial was assigned as a design problem in one of her classes. With fellow students, Lin visited the site on the Mall and tried to visualize an appropriate structure.
