The 8th Military Police Group was established to provide planning, direction, and supervision for the criminal investigation work required by the U.S. Army in Vietnam. It was at Long Binh. In July 1972 it became the basis for the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Center, Vietnam Field Office. A provisional Military Police Group (Criminal Investigation) had been first formed on 3 November 1966 in charge of all criminal investigative work in Vietnam except for metropolitan Saigon area.

The 16th Military Police Group provided command, control, staff planning and coordination for the military police units assigned and attached to it in the I and II Corps Tactical Zones of Vietnam. The 93rd, 97th, and 504th Military Police Battalions were under its control.

89th Military Police Group

92nd Military Police Battalion

The 92nd Military Police Battalion deployed to Vietnam from Fort Bragg to provide control, staff planning, criminal investigation and supervision for the organizational administration, training, operations and logistics of assigned or attached military police units. It was stationed at Tan Son Nhut rendering military police support for Saigon and was subordinate to the 89th Military Police Group.

93rd Military Police Battalion

The 93rd Military Police Battalion was initially stationed at Qui Nhon. It moved to Phu Thanh in 1967 and in 1968 to Phu Bai, rendering military police support in northern II Corps Tactical Zone of Vietnam under the 16th Military Police Group. On 29 March 1969 the battalion returned to Qui Nhon.
