1st Engineer Battalion (Divisional)

Departed Vietnam: 7 April 1970 Previous Station: Fort Riley Authorized Strength: Battalion 1966 - 936 / 1968 - 972 The 1st Engineer Battalion was organic to the 1st Infantry Division, providing the division-level support required. This involved constructing and repairing bridges, roads and airfields as well as em-placing or removing obstacles and fortifications, dry-gap and floating bridges, and fighting as infantry when required. It served with the division throughout its service in Vietnam though its companies were often with the division's infantry and artillery units. 4th Engineer Battalion (Divisional)

Departed Vietnam: 15 December 1970 Previous Station: Fort Lewis Authorized Strength: Battalion 1966 - 823 / 1968 - 972 / 1970 - 770 The 4th Engineer Battalion was part of the 4th Infantry Division and had the same responsibilities as those outlined for the 1st Engineer Battalion. The battalion was colocated with the division headquarters though its subordinate companies were often detached to support the division's widespread brigades and battalions. Departed Vietnam: 6 August 1971 Previous Station: Fort Carson Authorized Strength: 256 Company A of the 7th Engineer Battalion was part of the 1st Brigade Task Force of the 5th Infantry Division (Mech). Its mission was to increase combat effectiveness of the brigade by providing engineer combat support as well as to undertake limited infantry combat missions when required. Departed Vietnam: 3 April 1971 Previous Station: Fort Benning Authorized Strength: Battalion 1966 - 621 / 1968 - 621 / 1970 - 457 The 8th Engineer Battalion was part of the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) and was lighter than a normal infantry division engineer battalion. It provided direct support to tactical elements in the removal or em-placement of obstacles and fortifications, construction of bridges, fords, culverts, and airfield facilities, and fought as infantry when required. It specialized in rendering airmobile engineer equipment support. The battalion was often scattered, supporting the far-flung elements of the 1st Cavalry Division through its highly mobile pattern of warfare. 14th Engineer Battalion (Combat)Arrived Vietnam: 19 October 1966
Departed Vietnam: 31 August 1971 Previous Station: Fort Bragg Authorized Strength Battalion 1966 - 794 1968 - 812 1970 - 812 The 14th Engineer Battalion was equipped to perform forward area construction, obstacle preparation, demolition work and fighting as infantry. It provided all non-divisional engineer support in its area and served as the local construction agency for all projects, especially base construction, upgrading land lines of communication and airfield construction and rehabilitation. The battalion landed at Tuy Hoa but moved to the control of the 35th Engineer Group at Dong Ba Thin in November 1966 and Cam Rahn Bay in 1967. On 14 March 1968 it was transferred again to the 45th Engineer Group at Thon Me Thuy ("Wunder Beach"), Quang Tri, later at Gia Le and Da Nang. |
