Departed Vietnam: 20 September 1971 Previous Station: Fort Bragg Authorized Strength: HHC 1966 - 142 1968 - 173 1971 - 142 The 18th Engineer Brigade was formed 29 July 1921 as the 347th Engineers (General Service) in the Organized Reserves. It was ordered into active military service 6 May 1942 at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, and redesignated the 347th Engineer General Service Regiment. For its service in Normandy, Northern France, and Rhineland, and Central Europe during World War II, the unit received the Meritorious Unit Commendation. After the war it was deactivated in Germany. Redesignated the 18th Engineer Brigade, it was reactivated at Fort Leonard Wood on 25 October 1954. On 26 March 1963 the brigade was again deactivated, but on 16 July 1965 was activated at Fort Bragg and prepared for deployment to Vietnam. An advance party of the brigade arrived in Vietnam 3 September 1965 and became operational two weeks later. It was originally in control of all U.S. Army engineer activities there until the U.S. Army Command, Vietnam (Provisional) was created in December 1966. At this point the 18th Engineer Brigade became responsible for engineer efforts in the I and II Corps Tactical Zones under I Field Force, Vietnam. It was located at Tan Son Nhut until 1 December 1966 when it was relocated to Dong Ba Thin. |
20th Engineer Brigade

Departed Vietnam: 20 September 1971 Previous Station: Fort Bragg Authorized Strength: HHC 1968 - 173 1971 - 142 The history of the 20th Engineer Brigade extends back to the American Civil War though the unit designations have changed many times since. It was originally constituted on 3 August 1861 (under a different title, however), and its ancestors fought in campaigns in the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection, the Mexican Expedition, and the World Wars I and II. The brigade headquarters was reactivated 1 May 1967 and arrived in Vietnam later that year. It arrived to take over responsibility for engineer activities within the III and IV Corps Tactical Zones, as well as to render engineer support for II Field Force, Vietnam. It was located in Bien Hoa. |
