Becoming the division's aviation group, it was headquartered at Phu Bai. As part of the LAM SON 719 incursion into Laos in February - April 1971, the 101st Aviation Group saw intense aerial combat, becoming the command and control organization for all aviation assets involved in the operation. During this time frame the group was heavily reinforced by the 1st Aviation Brigade. The 101st Aviation Group normally commanded only the 101st, 158th, 169th, Aviation Battalions and the 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry (Air) in its role as division aviation headquarters.

The 160th Aviation Group was created to convert the 101st Airborne Division to an airmobile configuration and was stationed between Bien Hoa and Phu Bai. In June 1969, with three aviation battalions, the 101st, 158th, and 159th as well as the newly reorganized 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry, the group was re designated as the 101st Aviation Group.
